Bygone Peebles (Dec)

Bygone Peebles

Description:

Peebles was an ancient royal burgh and market town that became a police burgh in 1862, seven years after the railway arrived and dragged the town out of its rural isolation. The railway benefitted the mills and also brought curious day-trippers, thus kick-starting the town’s growth as a country resort and the coining of the phrase ‘Peebles for Pleasure’. The phots in the book date from the Edwardian period until WW2 and show the town as it was then, with both the Tweedside Mill and the March Street Mills in operation and the town served by two railway lines. Day-to-day work, life and leisure are reflected in the selection of old photos chosen, many of which have not previously been published and all of which are accompanied by detailed and informative captions.
