Unlike the great and the good, the real-life experiences of ordinary people are apt to be overlooked - perhaps unfairly dismissed as being of little account or else simply forgotten. Soldier, sailor, coal miner, ploughman, medical doctor and a good many others: Ayrshire Voices depicts the world as seen through the eyes of a range of individuals, both men and women, all with an Ayrshire connection. Some chapters recount interesting or unusual experiences, while others recall episodes and events that typify a particular time or generation. The remaining chapters describe unexpected discoveries brought to light while delving into family history.
Focusing for the most part on the years of the twentieth century, the subject matter ranges from breezily lighthearted to content that is markedly darker. Written in a highly readable style, the book introduces its readers to a
variety of colourful character and offers an insight into their lives. |
