Description:

Saint Cuthbert, who later became Bishop of Lindisfarne, was reputed to have been born in Oxton (known then as Ugston) in AD635 and to have baptised his early converts in a local holy spring. Equally ancient is the Royal Burgh of Lauder, which, according to the New Statistical Account of Scotland (vol.II) existed as a kirk-town during the reign of David I (1124-53). Today the area has a tranquil charm, which is much in evidence in the collection of pictures contained in this volume, and is a centre for tourist exploration of Edinburgh and the East Coast of Scotland.
