Now in her seventies, writer Patricia Martyn-Boyd has retired to the Highlands. Her books are now out of print and she hasn't written a word in years, but a television company is now about to film her last television story, featuring the aristocratic Scottish detective Lady Harriet Vare. Though Patricia is too snobbish to mix with the locals, she can't help but confide her excitement in local policeman Hamish Macbeth. But to her horror, she finds her beloved tale and characters butchered by the screenwriter and actress cast to play Lady Vare. When both the screenwriter and leading lady are found murdered, suspicion points to the disgruntled author and she must turn to her only friend in the Highalnds, Hamish Macbeth, to prove her innocence.
