Ae Fond Kiss: The Love Letters of Robert Burns and Clarinda
Stock No: 43253
ISBN/EAN: 9781841830186, Author: Donny O'Rourke, Publisher: Mercat Press, Format: PB
In 1787 Robert Burns was the toast of literary Edinburgh. He had published his first volume of poetry to widespread acclaim. Amon the many people anxious to meet the famous ploughman poet was the lovely Agnes M'Lehose ('Clarinda'), the daughter of a Glasgow surgeon. She was married, though living alone in modest circumstances in Edinburgh's Potterrow, having left her abusive husband. Her wish was granted when she met Burns at a party, where they were immediately attracted to each other. They exchanged letters over the next three years, meeting infrequently. Their relationship developed into a love affair, albeit a doomed one. This book tells the story of their love through their letters - 'a love story to rant with the great ones'.
